Lightning Drill Skating
Title: Lightning Conditioning Drill Category: Conditioning / Compete Age Tags: U9, U11, U13, U15, U18+ Skill Tags: Conditioning, Speed, Acceleration, Stops and Starts, Edgework Purpose: Develop skating conditioning, explosive acceleration, and repeated stop-and-start ability while maintaining proper skating technique. Setup: Player starts on the goal line facing up ice. Players enter the drill continuously with proper spacing. Drill Steps: • Player skates from the goal line to the center red line and performs a full stop. • Player skates back to the near blue line and performs a full stop. • Player skates forward to the far blue line and performs a full stop. • Player skates back to the center red line and performs a full stop. • Player skates forward to the far goal line and performs a full stop. Coaching Points: • Explode quickly on every start. • Perform full, controlled stops at each line. • Keep knees bent and maintain strong skating posture. • Use full stride extension. • Maintain effort and technique throughout the drill. Variations: • Perform drill while carrying a puck. • Perform backward skating on return segments. • Perform transitions at each line. • Perform half-ice version for younger players. Time: 5–10 minutes
