Cone Slalom Dribbling Drill Objective Improve change-of-direction ball control while developing balance, coordination, and controlled speed through tight dribble movements. Age Categories U7, U9, U11, U13 Tags Dribbling, Ball Control, Footwork Equipment Needed - 4–8 cones - 1 basketball per player Players Any number (organized in lines) Space Needed Sideline or half court Purpose - Improve change-of-direction dribbling - Build coordination and balance - Develop control at speed Setup - Place cones in a straight or zig-zag line. - Space cones 1.5–2 meters apart. - Players line up behind the first cone. - One ball per player. Drill Steps - Player begins dribbling toward the first cone. - Weaves in and out of the cones under control. - Maintains a low stance and controlled rhythm. - Finishes with a layup or pull-up shot (optional). - Retrieves the ball and joins the back of the line. Progressions / Variations - Weak-hand dribbling only. - Perform a crossover at each cone. - Use behind-the-back or between-the-legs moves. - Add a timed challenge for completion. - Add light defensive pressure for older groups. Coaching Points - Stay low in an athletic stance. - Push the ball — do not slap it. - Change pace through the cones. - Keep eyes forward. - Protect the ball with the body. Common Mistakes - Standing upright. - Losing rhythm between cones. - Over-dribbling. - Cutting cones too wide. - Watching the ball. Time Range 5–7 minutes
